Why Our Perfumes Cost $49.95 and Not $400
There's a question we get constantly, usually phrased politely and always meaning the same thing: if it smells that good, why is it so cheap?
Fair question. Here's the honest answer — including the parts most fragrance brands would rather you didn't think about.
What You're Actually Paying For in a $400 Bottle
Break down the retail price of a luxury fragrance and the liquid inside is a small fraction of it. The rest goes to things that never touch your skin:
Celebrity campaigns. A single global fragrance ad campaign — the actor's fee, the director, the media buy — runs into the millions. That cost is spread across every bottle sold.
Boutique real estate. Flagship stores in premium retail locations cost enormous sums per square metre. When a fragrance is boutique-exclusive, you're helping pay that rent.
Retail margin. Department stores and boutiques take a substantial cut of every bottle. Direct-to-customer brands don't have that layer at all.
The bottle itself. Sculptural glass, weighted caps, magnetic closures, layered packaging. Beautiful objects — and beautiful objects cost money to design, tool and produce.
Brand prestige. Some of the price is simply the price. Luxury pricing is a signal, not a calculation. A fragrance that cost $80 to make can be priced at $400 because $400 is what "luxury" is supposed to feel like.
None of this is a scandal. It's a business model, and it produces genuinely beautiful products. It's just not the business model we're in.
What We Spend Money On
We're a direct-to-customer Australian fragrance brand. That means:
- We sell directly to you. No department store margin, no boutique lease, no retail middle layer.
- We don't advertise with celebrities. Our marketing budget is a fraction of a designer house's, and that difference lands in your price.
- Our packaging is simple. Clean, functional, protective. Not sculptural.
- We spend where it shows up on your skin: eau de parfum concentration.
That last point is the one that matters most.
The Concentration Decision
Here's where most affordable fragrance brands cut corners, and where we didn't.
Fragrance strength is measured by oil concentration:
| Type | Fragrance oil | Typical wear time |
|---|---|---|
| Eau de Parfum (EDP) | ~15–20% | 6–10+ hours |
| Eau de Toilette (EDT) | ~5–15% | 3–5 hours |
| Body mist | 1–3% | Under an hour |
Fragrance oil is the single most expensive input in any perfume. So the fastest way to hit a low retail price is to use less of it — sell mist-strength liquid in a perfume-shaped bottle, price it at $25, and let the customer discover the problem at 11am.
We build at eau de parfum concentration: 8–10 hours of wear on both Blue Whisper and Midnight Shadow. It costs us more per bottle. It's also the entire reason a $49.95 fragrance can genuinely compete with a $170 or $400 one, rather than just resembling it for twenty minutes.
What You Give Up
We'd rather tell you this than have you discover it:
No designer logo. If the label matters to you — and for some people it genuinely does — a dupe won't scratch that itch.
Not a molecular clone. Our fragrances are inspired by scent profiles, not laboratory replications. The character is there; a side-by-side comparison would find differences, usually in the opening minutes.
Simpler packaging. The bottle does its job. It won't impress anyone on a dresser.
No boutique experience. No consultant, no gift wrapping, no scented shopping bag.
If those things are worth $350 to you, buy the designer bottle — genuinely, no hard feelings. If what you actually wanted was the smell, we built this for you.
The Cost-Per-Wear Maths
This is the number that changed how we think about fragrance pricing.
At three sprays a day, a 50ml bottle lasts roughly three to four months:
- A $49.95 Seslor EDP: about 40 cents per day
- A $400 luxury EDP: several dollars per day
Over a year of daily wear, that difference runs into the hundreds. For a scent most people can't distinguish across a dinner table.
The Honest Summary
We're not cheaper because we cut quality. We're cheaper because we cut everything that isn't the fragrance — the campaigns, the boutiques, the retail margin, the sculptural glass — and kept the one input that determines whether a perfume actually works.
